Entering the ornate and intimate setting of the Palace
Theatre, a giant sparkling lipstick greets you on stage as above your head a
glitter ball shimmers and spins; a perfect start to an evening guaranteed to be
filled with dynamic Drag Queen frolics! The glitz and glamour of the West End
pales in comparison with this dazzling show where sequins, feathers and confetti
were abundant; no doubt half the world’s population of ostriches are now bald!
Featuring a flawless cast of actors with stunning dancing and singing, my
Priscilla tickets were well worth the
trip.
For those unaware of the story of
Priscilla, the drag queen
Mitzi Mitosis, in his “real” life named
Anthony “Tick” Belrose (played by
Richard
Grieve), has a job in the distant town of Alice Springs, Australia; a
location where he will also meet his son,
Benjamin,
for the first time. He convinces his friends, who are also performers, to join
him. The journey to Alice Springs in a large tour bus, called “
Priscilla, Queen
of the Desert”, begins. Tick is joined by the transsexual woman
Bernadette Bassenger (played by
Don Gallagher) and the showy drag queen
Felicia Jollygoodfellow (played by
Oliver Thornton). The three
performances by Grieve, Gallagher and Thornton were impeccable; their crisp
comic timing naturally interwoven with bitchy, sarcastic remarks, despite the
fact that their characters clearly care so much about each other, united in
places where their kind are not welcome. For his on-going performance as
Felicia, Oliver Thornton has won the
Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Choice Award for “
Best Supporting Actor in a Musical” as well as winning the
BroadwayWorld.com UK Award for “
Best
Leading Actor in a Musical”. The portrayal of these three characters is
just why
Priscilla tickets are
selling out night after night.
One of the main aspects of the show that contributed so much
to its glamour was, of course, the outrageous costumes. From the first scene
you can see the reason why the show won a Laurence Olivier Award,
Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Choice Award and a BroadwayWorld.com UK Award
for “
Best Costume Design”. Outfits
included a dress made entirely of flip-flops (“thongs” in Australia) and outfits
to represent the animals of the Australian outback, including emus, lizards and
even koala bears; all outfits shone with bright colours and fabrics, the design
of each costume superb in its attention-to-detail.
