Shrek burst onto our screens back in 2001 in the animated Dreamworks film that captured the hearts of both children and adults with loveable characters and references to elements of popular culture. The book was originally written in 1990 by William Steig and the popularity of the book lead to the successful film franchise. There has now been 4 Shrek films that have all been hugely successful, with the latest film, Shrek Forever After, coming out this year. The immense love for the big green ogre is still very much alive, which has spurned the latest adventure, Shrek the Musical.
Lindsay-Abaire and Jason Moore, the Director, began working on Shrek the Musical back in 2002 with Jeanine Tesori joining the team in 2004 to write the sensational music. Shrek The Musical made its stage premiere in an out-of-town tryout at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle on August 14, 2008 with the first North American Tour beginning in July 2010. The show is due to hit the West End in the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane around June 2011, but you can book your Shrek the Musical tickets now so you can make sure you catch the first performances of this fun packed production. The new cast includes Amanda Holden as Princess Fiona, Richard Blackwood as Donkey, Nigel Lindsay as Shrek and Nigel Harman as Lord Farqaard, so it is bound to be a huge West End hit.
