The affection for the Swedish pop legends ABBA has been huge ever since they burst onto the pop music scene back in the early 70’s. Their combination of catchy pop tunes, funky stage outfits and quirky Swedish charm made them instant hits and were adored at their live shows until they broke up in 1982. Throughout the 80’s and 90’s the songs lived on and the fan club of devoted fans was still strong until the late 1990’s when the band once again started to get some more new fans. The Mamma Mia musical first premiered in London in 1999, with ABBA Gold shooting to the top of the charts in the United Kingdom once again. The Mamma Mia musical is obviously taken from their 1975 chart topping hit, but the plot is completely fictional and not at all biographical. With Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, the previous members of the band, very much on board, the authenticity and the magic of ABBA is very much in the show.
The Mamma Mia musical soon became an incredible hit in the West End with over 42 million people having now seen the show and it has gone on to gross $2 billion dollars worldwide. In July 2008, the musical had yet another surge in popularity with the release of the Mamma Mia movie, which became a phenomenal hit around the world with the likes of Meryl Streep, Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan lighting up the silver screen. Since then, the Mamma Mia stage show has continued to grow in popularity and is still one of the most popular shows in the West End.
